My First Driving Lesson

Yesterday (Monday 25 June 2013) , I had my first driving lesson. I'd always wanted to drive from the age of 12. My drive for this passion was so great that as soon as I turned 17, on that exact day, I filled out the form and sent of for my provisional driving licence. It came about two weeks later and I was so happy.

I looked at many, many driving schools including BSM (British School of Motoring), AA and RED. After a thorough search and thinking process I decided to choose RED as they seemed to have the best deal on price and I liked the fact that their car had been voted best car to learn with for 5 years consecutively. I then paid them for the driving lessons which was surprisingly simple. There were no complicated procedures to go through. It was just pay and learn.

The day came for my lesson, and I could hardly sleep the night before as I was so excited. This wasn't so good as I need sleep to focus on the road, but fortunately I was alert. My driving instructor was very, very friendly, often talking to me about my holiday plans and pointing out how the "White Van Men" were parked badly. I found her very funny and this helped to relax me and enjoy the lesson, as well as making me more inclined to listen to her.

We went through safety drills that I should do constantly while driving and always before I drive, including the POM (Preparation, Observation, Manuver) routine and how to put a seatbelt on properly (I found out weirdly enough that I've been doing it wrong for 17 years...). I learnt how to steer the car using the "Push, Pull" method, which happily I found natural to do, so I didn't take half an hour to learn it like some other learners do.

We then learnt how to move the car forward, around bends and then stop safely in a parking bay.  This was the most fun i've had in years. At first I felt too young to be driving (I still think i'm 12 until I look in the mirror and get a rude awakening) but once I had a grip on the steering wheel, the car set up to my liking and the wind blowing my hair about that theory went out the window. I felt at one with the car, which is really good if I want to learn quickly.

I can't wait for my next driving lesson. I was told that it is better to have at least two lessons a week if I want to pass any time soon. I've only got time for two and in the future I may struggle to get my driving lessons in edgeways, but I'll try, oh i'll try my hardest to fit it in. If anyone wants to drive as much as me I reccomend learning as early in life as possible, so that you can get that air of independence that so many 17 year olds don't have. You may think you're independent enough at 17, but it's when you start to drive that you feel truly accepted as a part of the adult world.

  1. Needless to say, you enjoyed much your first driving lesson. With enough enthusiasm and passion, you'll learn easily everything you need to learn to become a responsible driver. Good luck, Donna!
